The Finnish driver set his best time, a 1:23.261, mid-way through the afternoon session on the super-soft tyre, after a busy day of running for many teams.

Bottas managed 108 laps in total and finished four tenths clear of Lewis Hamilton’s Mercedes W07. The team split running once again, with the three-time champion completing 73 laps in total. His best time was set on the soft tyre.

Nico Rosberg took over for the afternoon, setting his best time of a 1:26.298 on the medium Pirelli compound towards the end of his race simulation. The German added 91 laps to Mercedes’ tally.

Like Bottas, Kevin Magnussen set his best time on the red-marked super-soft. He was seven tenths down on the Williams FW38 in third after 126 laps in the Renault RS16.

Sebastian Vettel enjoyed a productive day in the Ferrari SF16-H, finishing fourth with 151 laps. Jenson Button clocked up 121 tours of the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya for McLaren and was fifth overall on the soft tyre.

Daniel Ricciardo’s 1:25.235 was sixth on the mediums and made up for lost time on Tuesday by completing 135 laps. Carlos Sainz Jr had the highest lap count of anyone on Wednesday with 166.

He was seventh on the leaderboard by the chequered flag, ahead of Sergio Perez, who improved late on in the Force India VJM09 after 128 laps.

Behind Rosberg, Pascal Wehrlein was 10th for Manor after an encouraging 79 laps. Marcus Ericsson brought out the red flag in the afternoon. His Sauber C35 lost a rear wheel and he spin into the gravel at Turn 4. A late improvement failed to move him up the order.

It was another difficult day for the Haas F1 Team. After 23 laps were completed on Tuesday, Esteban Gutierrez managed just one tour of the Spanish circuit on day two of the test after a turbo failure.
