The German driver was at the wheel of the new W07 for the morning session but his time proved to be unbeatable.

Rosberg put in a 1:23.022 on the soft tyre early in the day but remained fastest by the chequered flag, although the time was still two tenths slower than Sebastian Vettel’s from the opening test. He completed 82 laps in total before handing the car over to team-mate Lewis Hamilton.

The three-time champion spent most of the afternoon doing long runs, including a race simulation, but he jumped to sixth on the medium tyre late on. Hamilton’s best time of 1:25.051 was the best of the 90 laps he managed in the later session.

Valtteri Bottas was second for Williams after a productive day driving the FW38, finishing two tenths down on Rosberg after a quick lap on the ultra soft tyre. He clocked up 123 laps of running in the car.

Fernando Alonso was third for McLaren. He managed 93 laps, with his quickest time – set in the morning – being 1.7 seconds off the pace. His running was delayed slightly by a late red flag before lunch following a telemetry problem.

Kimi Raikkonen was another driver who brought out the red flag, after stopping on the run to Turn 1 in the afternoon.

He lapped the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya 72 times and finished fourth on the leaderboard. Daniil Kvyat’s Red Bull RB12 suffered a few technical issues but he was fifth on the soft tyre, after 69 laps at the wheel.

Hamilton was sixth, ahead of Max Verstappen – who improved on the soft tyre late on and managed the most laps of anyone with 144 – and Nico Hulkenberg.

Felipe Nasr debuted the new Sauber C35 and finished ninth with 103 laps on the board. Kevin Magnussen brought out a red flag in the final minutes but enjoyed a productive day, gaining 119 laps worth of mileage in the RS16.

Haas F1 struggled with reliability woes, calling it a day early in the afternoon following a fuel system issue. Esteban Gutierrez managed just 23 laps and was 11th, ahead of Rio Haryanto, who completed 45 laps and set a best time of 1:27.625 on the soft tyre.
