Raikkonen was quickest on Thursday, while Vettel set the pace on the eighth and last day of winter running before the opening round of the season in Australia later this month.

Both drivers tried out the new ‘halo’ cockpit protection design prototype during their running on the final two morning sessions of the second test, completing single installation laps each.

Raikkonen ended Thursday quickest with a 1:22.765 on the new ultra soft Pirelli tyre compound, setting the time in the morning. He managed 136 laps in total and finished almost half a second clear of Felipe Massa’s Williams.

Nico Hulkenberg was third for Force India, also on the ultra soft, while Max Verstappen completed the most laps of anyone with 159. He was fourth, with Nico Rosberg fifth before handing the Mercedes W07 over to Lewis Hamilton for the afternoon running.

Felipe Nasr was sixth in the new Sauber C35, ahead of Fernando Alonso and Pascal Wehrlein, who managed just 45 laps for Manor. Daniil Kvyat, Jolyon Palmer and Hamilton were next up, the latter two completing their best times on the medium tyre.

Romain Grosjean rounded out the times on day three of the second test, managing 78 laps despite causing several red flags for spins into the gravel and reliability issues. He was 12th for Haas, 4.4 seconds off Raikkonen’s pace.

Vettel then took over for Ferrari on day four of the final test, going quickest with a 1:22.852 on the super-soft Pirelli tyre. He completed a similar programme to his team-mate, debuting the ‘halo’ in the morning and ticking a race simulation off the list in the afternoon.

Carlos Sainz Jr was second, two tenths behind Vettel, on the ultra soft tyre after 131 laps. Massa remained in the car and was third, ahead of Sergio Perez – who managed just 60 laps before his running was cut short by stoppage on track at Turn 12 – and Hamilton.

Mercedes continued to split its running. Hamilton lost some ground in the final minutes of the morning after stopping on track. Rosberg was 13th and slowest on the medium tyre after his afternoon run in the W07.

Daniel Ricciardo and Jenson Button clocked up over 100 laps for Red Bull and McLaren respectively. Behind them, in eighth, was Palmer in the Renault. Despite a few issues he managed 90 laps. Marcus Ericsson was next up for Sauber.

Haas split its running to give Esteban Gutierrez more time in the car and the Mexican was 11th, with 25 laps, one tenth behind team-mate Grosjean. Rio Haryanto suffered a delayed start but was 12th after pushing his lap tally up to 58 by the chequered flag, which signalled the end of pre-season testing.
