The German driver set the pace on the opening day of testing, on a medium tyre run, but went over two seconds quicker on the new fifth compound.

Ferrari’s SF16-H was one of eight cars to pass the 100-lap mark, with Ferrari enjoying a productive day at the Spanish circuit. Vettel completed 126 tours of the track in total despite causing a late red flag in the final minutes.

Daniel Ricciardo briefly topped the standings in the final hour before being demoted to second by his former team-mate. The Australian finished seven tenths down on Vettel and completed 112 laps.

Sergio Perez was at the wheel of the VJM09, sampling Force India’s new car for the first time. He was third overall and managed 101 laps.

Nico Rosberg was fourth, as Mercedes focused on mileage and reliability. With the W07 sporting striking new bargeboards, Rosberg was fourth quickest, two seconds behind Vettel. The German completed the most laps of testing so far, clocking up a tally of 172.

Marcus Ericsson was fifth in the 2015 Sauber, while Esteban Gutierrez was an encouraging sixth for Haas. The Mexican’s first time in the car was slightly delayed by Monday’s front wing failure but he managed 79 laps in the VF-16, setting his best time on the soft tyre.

It was a quiet day for Williams but Valtteri Bottas completed 134 laps, finishing seventh, one tenth behind Gutierrez. Pascal Wehrlein was eighth in his second day at the wheel of the Manor MRT05, lapping the circuit 71 times.

Fernando Alonso managed 119 laps in the McLaren MP4-31, more than the team did during the opening four-day test in 2014. He was 3.2 seconds down on Vettel’s best time.

Jolyon Palmer’s second day in the Renault RS16 was cut short by an engine issue, having brought out the red flag mid-way through the afternoon. He was 10th and completed 42 laps.

Max Verstappen also caused a stoppage on Tuesday but he managed to get back out and boost his tally of laps to 121, wrapping up the timesheets 3.7 seconds behind Vettel.
