It was a busy day of on-track action, as teams and drivers sampled the new cars for the first time and gathered valuable data for the season ahead.

Several car launches took place on Monday morning, prior to the start of the first session. Force India, Renault, Mercedes and Haas all uncovered their cars.

Menawhile Red Bull, Williams, Toro Rosso and Manor chose to reveal their 2016 challengers as they exited the pit garages for their first runs of the day.

Vettel topped the morning session and his best time of 1:24.939 remained unbeaten through the afternoon, leaving the German fastest after managing 69 laps.

The SF16-H spent several longer spells in the garage, but he finished just under half a second clear of Lewis Hamilton. The reigning world champion enjoyed a very productive day in the W07, managing the most laps of anyone with 155 tours of the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya.

Daniel Ricciardo was one of the first drivers out on track on Monday, despite early damp conditions, and put his RB12 third on the leaderboard by the chequered flag with a 1:26.044. He lapped the track 86 times.

Valtteri Bottas was fourth in the Williams FW38, 1.152 seconds shy of Vettel's pace-setting time after 80 laps. Force India development driver Alfonso Celis Jr was the first to sample the VJM09 and he finished fifth after 57 laps.

Jenson Button ended an encouraging first day for the McLaren MP4-31 in sixth with 83 laps under his belt. Carlos Sainz Jr's day ended slightly early due to abnormality in the gearbox oil system data. He was seventh quickest after 55 laps.

Marcus Ericsson drove Sauber's updated 2015 car to eighth and completed the second highest tally of laps, with 88. Pascal Wehrlein was ninth after a late flurry of laps in the new Manor MRT05, improving to a 1:28.292. The German lapped the track 54 times.

It was a difficult debut for the Haas VF-16, but that was to be expected. Romain Grosjean was 10th on the timesheets with a 1:28.399, managing 31 laps despite bringing out the red flag late in the morning session after a front wing failure.

Jolyon Palmer rounded out the results on day one of testing. He managed 36 laps in the Renault RS16 and was 4.4 seconds off the pace. For a full look at the test day, check out the Grand Prix Times live text feed.
