Nico Hulkenberg set the pace for Force India on day three of the opening winter test, while Romain Grosjean starred for the new Haas F1 team at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya.
It was a busy day of running for all 11 teams, but featured several disruptions due to red flags. Wednesday’s session was Hulkenberg’s first time sampling the new VJM09.
The German ended the morning fastest on the medium tyre, but lowered his benchmark significantly to a 1:23.110 in the afternoon after switching to the super-soft rubber. He completed 99 laps in total for Force India.
Grosjean put in a late run on the soft tyre to go second for Haas, although his best lap was 2.7 seconds slower than Hulkenberg’s time. The Frenchman’s first day in the VF-16 was interrupted by a front wing failure but he added 82 laps to his tally on Wednesday.
Kimi Raikkonen spent several long spells in the Ferrari garage in the morning, but put in 77 laps overall during his first day in the SF16-H to go third quickest.
Kevin Magnussen was at the wheel of the Renault RS16 for the first time and despite stopping at the pit lane exit twice in the afternoon, he finished fourth and managed 110 laps.
Mercedes split its driver line-up, due to the considerable amount of running being completed. Nico Rosberg was in the car in the morning and finished fifth, clocking 74 laps. Lewis Hamilton returned to the car in the afternoon and was eighth, adding 88 laps to the team’s tally.
Carlos Sainz Jr managed the most tours of the Spanish circuit than anyone else, with 161, and ended the day sixth in the Toro Rosso SRT11 despite an early issue due to a loose right-rear wheel. He was 3.1 seconds down on Hulkenberg’s time.
Felipe Nasr was in for Sauber and managed 115 laps in the 2015 car, while Daniil Kvyat was ninth as he tried out the RB12 for the first time. He managed 74 laps and finished three tenths clear of Felipe Massa, who was 10th for Williams.
Jenson Button ended the day 11th with a 1:26.919, managing 71 laps before a hydraulics leak cut short McLaren’s running. Rio Haryanto was in the Manor MRT05 for the first time and clocked 77 laps on day three of testing.
