Raikkonen fastest as first winter test concludes in Spain

Kimi Raikkonen topped the timesheets on the final day of the opening pre-season Formula 1 test, after a run on the ultra soft Pirelli tyre.

The Ferrari driver spent a large chunk of the afternoon in the garage before emerging late on to boost his lap tally for the day to 79 at the wheel of the SF16-H.

Raikkonen’s best time of a 1:23.477 was set in the morning on the new ultra soft compound and proved to be unbeatable. Daniil Kvyat got closest to Red Bull, finishing eight tenths clear of the Ferrari.

The Russian also set his quickest time on the new Pirelli rubber and lapped the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya 95 times, ending the test on an encouraging note. A late super-soft tyre run for Force India development driver Alfonso Celis Jr advanced him to third and he managed 75 laps in the VJM09.

Kevin Magnussen caused a red flag in the final hour after stopping the RS16 at Turn 3, failing to reappear for the final minutes of the afternoon session. However, the Danish driver managed the most laps of anyone, clocking 153 in total and making up for ground lost earlier in the week.

Magnussen was 1.8 seconds behind Raikkonen in fourth, ahead of Max Verstappen in the Toro Rosso and Felipe Nasr in the 2015 Sauber. They were the only three to get into triple digit lap counts. Mercedes split its running once again.

Lewis Hamilton was in the car in the morning, managing 99 laps and finishing eighth with a 1:26.295. His team-mate Nico Rosberg took over for the afternoon and gained an additional 86 laps worth of data, finishing one tenth ahead of Hamilton in seventh.

Felipe Massa spent most of the morning completing aero evaluations but did pick up the pace as the day went on to go ninth with a 1:26.483 on the soft tyre. Esteban Gutierrez also caused a red flag and was 10th after 89 laps at the wheel of the VF-16.

A spin and contact with the wall early in the afternoon for Rio Haryanto brought Manor’s day to an early end. The Indonesian was 11th overall and was limited to just 51 laps worth of running due to the off-track excursion.

Fernando Alonso failed to even set a time after a coolant leak on his McLaren. The team worked hard to fix the issue but ran out of time and had to call it a day early. He managed just three laps in total on the final day of test one. Full times can be found here.
