The Force India driver shares the #19 Porsche with Nick Tandy and Earl Bamber. Hulkenberg will be the first active F1 driver to compete in the famous endurance event since 2009.

The German has already raced the 919 Hybrid, finishing sixth at the FIA World Endurance Championship 6 Hours of Spa last month in Belgium.

Tandy’s best lap time in Le Mans qualifying was just under two seconds slower than the pole position time of 3:16.887 set by the #18 Porsche of Neel Jani, Marc Lieb and Romain Dumas.

Former Red Bull F1 driver Mark Webber’s #17 919 Hybrid – which he shares with Timo Bernhard and Brendan Hartley – will start second, with the German marque locking out the top three positions on the grid.

Audi’s three R18 e-tron quattros are next up. Defending Le Mans winners Benoit Treluyer, Marcel Fassler and Andre Lotterer – who competed in one F1 race for Caterham last year – will start fifth.

Toyota’s two LMP1 cars will start seventh and eighth. 2014 Marussia F1 racer Max Chilton will make his Le Mans debut from 13th, sharing his #23 GT-R LM Nismo with Jann Mardenborough and Olivier Pla.

The 83rd running of the famous Le Mans 24 Hours starts on Saturday at 3:00pm local time.
