Hulkenberg made his debut in the famous endurance race on Saturday, completing the first stint at the wheel of the LMP1 machine.

The #19 Porsche took control at the halfway point, with impressive stints from all three drivers and rival cars hitting trouble helping to establish a comfortable lead in the final hours.

Hulkenberg had the honour of finishing the race, finishing one lap ahead of the car’s nearest rival. It was Porsche’s first overall Le Mans win since 1998. Hulkenberg is also the first active F1 driver to compete at the Le Mans 24 Hours since Sebastien Bourdais in 2009.

It was a 1-2 finish for Porsche, with the #17 car of ex-Red Bull F1 driver Mark Webber, Timo Bernhard and Brendon Hartley in the runner-up spot.

The #7 Audi of one-time Caterham F1 driver Andre Lotterer, Benoit Treluyer and Marcel Fassler completed the podium. In LMP2, the #47 KCMG dominated, while the GTE Pro and GTE Am victories went to the #64 Corvette and the #72 SMP Ferrari.

It was a difficult debut for the Nissan LMP1 cars. Former Marussia F1 driver Max Chilton’s #23 machine suffered numerous issues and it was retired on Sunday afternoon.
