2015 Barcelona Test (1) - Day 3

F1 2015 winter testing continued at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya on Saturday, with Pastor Maldonado setting the pace.

The penultimate day of the second test brought mixed fortunes, with some teams enjoying trouble-free running and others losing time with problems.

Pascal Wehrlein returned to the cockpit of the Force India VJM07 after his outing with the team on Thursday morning. Sebastian Vettel and Daniil Kvyat both made their debuts at the test.

The four-time world champion was the first driver out on track for the morning session. However, he quickly brought out the red flag after a spin at turn four. He admitted that it was his own fault, on cold tyres and a slightly damp track.

Lewis Hamilton set the opening timed lap with a 1:33.246, as his day got off to a productive start. Marcus Ericsson was forced to sit and watch for most of the morning session after a late gearbox problem on the previous day.

Jenson Button brought out the second red flag of the day after stopping at turn seven with a reliability issue. He was able to return to the track before the lunch break. Max Verstappen moved to the top of the timesheets mid-way through the session, ending the morning fastest with a 1:24.739 on the super-soft tyre.

Light drizzle towards the end of the morning and over the lunch break meant the circuit was damp for the start of the afternoon session. Maldonado was the first to return to the track, with some drivers exiting the pit lane on intermediate tyres.

Conditions soon dried out as the sun emerged, with the majority of teams focusing on longer runs. Felipe Massa completed 55 laps in the morning but was replaced by Valtteri Bottas for the afternoon session at Williams.

A super-soft run from Maldonado saw him take over the top spot from Verstappen, putting in a 1:24.348. The time proved to be unbeatable, with the Venezuelan ending the day fastest for Lotus. He managed 104 laps in total, 25 less than Verstappen, who finished four tenths further back.

Hamilton was third for Mercedes after completing 101 laps, with a late improvement moving Ericsson up to fourth following his earlier delays. He enjoyed a more productive afternoon, increasing his lap tally to 53. Vettel was fifth for Ferrari and completed 105 laps, with his early spin proving to be Ferrari's only problem on Saturday.

Kvyat was sixth, with a race simulation boosting his lap count to 112. Massa dropped to seventh, with Wehrlein eighth for Force India after a busy day.

Bottas spent the majority of the afternoon completing pit stop practice, but a late timed lap moved him up to ninth.

McLaren suffered another tough day. A revised MGU-K part failed - the same problem that cut short the team's running on Thursday - and Button managed just 24 laps.

He propped up the timesheets with a best lap 4.8 seconds off the pace. The Englishman and Toro Rosso's Verstappen caused a late red flag when both drivers stopped on track at the pit exit.
