It was a busy and heavily disrupted day, with several off-track excursions and red flags interrupting proceedings.

Nico Hulkenberg and Romain Grosjean made their debuts at the test for Force India and Lotus respectively.

Valtteri Bottas, Sebastian Vettel and Carlos Sainz Jr were the first out on track when the morning session got underway. All teams bar McLaren completed running early on, with Nico Rosberg setting the opening timed lap - a 1:36.999.

The German brought out the red flag 25 minutes into the session when he spun into the gravel at turn five. Vettel then moved to the front, with Felipe Nasr stopping at the end of the pit lane with reliability issues.

Sainz Jr and Vettel traded fastest times, with the former ending the morning fastest after it was stopped prematurely following a crash for Fernando Alonso. The Spaniard lost control of his car at the exit of turn three and hit the inside wall.

The ambulance was deployed and Alonso was taken to the circuit medical centre, before being airlifted to hospital. Following checks, it was confirmed that he was okay but would stay in hospital overnight. The session was red flagged and eventually cut short before the lunch break.

Despite his early spin, Rosberg completed the most laps of the morning (68), and the 2014 championship runner-up was the first back out on track when testing resumed following a 15-minute delay.

Nasr returned to the track after his early problems. The red flag emerged four times in the afternoon. Nico Hulkenberg stopped at turn one, Sainz Jr spun into the wall at turn three, Valtteri Bottas pulled off track at turn four and Nasr's Sauber ground to a halt at turn six in the closing minutes.

A late improvement from Romain Grosjean on the super-soft tyre saw the Frenchman end the day fastest for Lotus, with a 1:24.067.  Rosberg was two tenths further back on the medium tyres, with both managing well over 100 laps in total.

Kvyat and Nasr finished third and fourth, with 104 and 73 laps respectively. Bottas moved up to fifth late in the session, lapping the track 129 times. Sainz Jr dropped to sixth after his crash cut short Toro Rosso's running. Following a long stint in the garage, Vettel re-appeared late in the day but remained seventh.

Hulkenberg was limited to 36 laps behind the wheel of the Force India VJM07, with Alonso rounding out the timesheets for McLaren. Jenson Button was scheduled to take over in the afternoon but the MP4-30 failed to return to the track.
