F1 2011 Performance Grid:

I have been researching and overlooking all the results from this year. I have now compiled a list of all the drivers in order of how well they have performed. Remember it is my own opinion so comment below on your views.

1) Sebastian Vettel - It really was a dominant season for the German driver. Not only did he clinch the title with a number of races in hand he also broke many records. A true double champion and deserving of the top spot in my performance grid.

2) Jenson Button - He really did step up his game this year. After being in the shadow's of Hamilton last year he impressed. With 3 impressive wins and many overtakes and clever strategies he collected an excellent number of podiums. He really did have a great year.

3) Mark Webber - Webber had to wait till the last round of the season to get a win, but what a win it was. Despite being compared constantly to his double champion team mate he has been very consistent this year and not many many mistakes.

4) Lewis Hamilton - He had a bumpy year this year, but when he was on the pace it was very impressive. Breaking the Red Bull pole dominance in Korea was a feat in itself. Some uncharacteristic incidents and his rivalry with Massa however have hampered his end of season result.

5) Fernando Alonso - Just a sole win this year for Alonso and i feel he has consistently been in the background. Some impressive drives have also contradicted some rather forgettable ones. Nando will be hoping 2012 will deliver.

6) Adrian Sutil - Sutil and Force India really stepped it up, he was on more than a few occasions the "best of the rest" with impressive drivers in Monaco, Germany, Belgium and Brazil. He also finished in 9th in the drivers championship, which is a big step forward.

7) Nico Rosberg - It has been a year of 7th places for Nico. Often being "best of the rest" and ahead of his team mate consistently. Stand out 5th places in China and Turkey showed the car had pace which Schumacher could not capitalise on.

8) Paul Di Resta - Best rookie award for me goes to Di Resta. An impressive year and some very good results have given him a welcome boost and chance to drive next year in 2012. He finished 13th in the championship with some inexperienced flashes but overall 7th in Hungary and 6th in Singapore really stamped his mark on the sport.

9) Felipe Massa - What can i say about Felipe? Apart from being attached by the hip to Hamilton its been a frustrating year. Even Ferrari have said he needs to step it up. Never higher than 5th and 4 no points finishes in a Ferrari show Alonso has the better ability.

10) Jaime Alguersuari - I recently did an article on Jamie's performance in 2011. 14th in the overall standings does not really illustrate an impressive year. He stepped it up a notch or 2 to retain his seat but only time can tell. 2 7th places and 3 8th place finishes along with numerous other points finishes show he has the pace over Buemi.

11) Segio Perez - Another rookie that impressed even if results did not come towards him that often. A heavy crash in Monaco saw him miss Canada but his ability to save his tyres or 1 stop has been applauded by many. I think he has a bright future and his 2nd season will be much anticipated.

12) Michael Schumacher - It was a rather messy year for the 7 time world champion. In my opinion he should leave the sport and let some younger talent come through. Canada was very good and he was very close to a podium but races in Europe and Brazil led to bad results.

13) Kamui Kobayashi - After a eye catching year in 2010 it was rather quiet for Kamui. Good results at the very beginning of the year and the very end were a boost for the team but the mid season pace was poor. 5th in Monaco was a rather amazing result if i do say so.

14) Heikki Kovalainen - Outperforming his car this year, he on more than a few occasions beat the midfield runners like Senna and Maldonado. KERS in 2012 will surely bring the team right into the midfield as they start the transition into "team caterham".

15) Bruno Senna - After being brought in mid-season to replace dwindling Nick Heidfeld his first qualifying effort in Belgium was a great boost. However the first corner incident and numerous disappointing results show he needs more experience. I felt he often qualified well but the races were his downfall.

16) Vitaly Petrov - Another Renault here. He had his first and only podium in Australia but after that the season went from good to bad. The awful pace in Singapore and Europe cemented a difficult year.

17) Sebastian Buemi - After being outperformed by team mate Alguersuari it was a strange year for the Swiss driver. After both his wheels blew off in China's practise session it seemed to catapult him into inconsistency. Odd points finishes did not impress me enough to bring him higher up in the grid.

18) Nick Heidfeld- A podium in the 2nd race of the season saw the team ecstatic by the result, but after that the team slid backwards. Needing a change they dropped him at the half way stage which signalled a lack luster year, and possibly his last.

19) Rubens Barrichello - Williams really struggled this season, with uncompetitive cars and drivers who unlike Heikki Kovalainen could not out perform their car. Often seeing them behind the Team Lotus drivers and only 4 points for Rubens may see him not in a car in 2012.

20) Pastor Maldonado - An inconsistant year for the rookie. It was pretty messy and many incidents marred a bad year. Only 1 point scored in an uncompetitive car, it was not his year. I am waiting however for him to prove me wrong as he just signed a deal with Willians for 2012.

21) Jarno Trulli - Outperformed by his team mate, numerous moaning outbursts about the car see Veteran Trulli being behind his team mate in qualifying and the race at almost every round, It must be his time to go.

22) Pedro De La Rosa - 1 last minute outing for the Spaniard in Canada wearing his Mclaren overalls in a Sauber, there is not much to say about him. However he will be back next year with back markers HRT.

23) Jerome D’Ambrosio - Another rookie who struggled but beat his team mate on a number of occasions is D'Ambrosio. Glock is an experienced and successful driver so to beat him has been a good achievement. However some bad results have seen him not retaining his seat at the new Marussia team in 2012.

24) Daniel Ricciardo - He replaced Karthikeyan at HRT mid season and consistently finished races ahead of Liuzzi, it was a good start for the Aussie.

25) Timo Glock - Timo had a difficult year again at the back, some team errors like the wheel coming off in Brazil has seen numerous retirements. 2012 will be a big year for the team.

26) Karun Chandhok - Just 1 sole outing in Germany saw rookie errors being made. He missed out unfortunately on a chance to drive in his home race. Also a number of FP1 sessions helped him understand the car. I think he is a really nice guy so would love to see him race in the future.

27) Vitantonio Liuzzi - The Italian driver had a poor year. After that stupid crash in Italy and being beaten by his team mates it was a disappointing year for the team.

28) Narain Karthikeyan - A few races and his home race saw Narain being behind Liuzzi most of the time. It was not a memorable year for him.

Teams

1) Red Bull Racing - Dominance is the only word you can describe 2011 for the RBR team. It was very consistent and with a great driver line up it was inevitable.

2) Vodafone Mclaren Mercedes - With Jenson finishing ahead of Lewis for the first time in the later's F1 career it was great on one side, but frustrating for the other. However they were close to RBR on many occasions and well ahead of Ferrari.

3) Ferrari - Massa weighed them down to be honest. Alonso showed speed and pace but the Brazilian Driver Massa meant they could not get 2nd in the constructors.

4) Force India - They have really impressed and improved over the year and both drivers have had some great performances, well deserved 4th.

5) Mercedes - They would of got 4th if Schumacher had been more consistent, and had less retirements. They had a quiet year at the head of the midfield but crashes and incidents for Schumacher showed he has not retained his dominance.

6) Torro Rosso - a brace decision for me but Alguersuari has been immensely impressive and Buemi has had some good results. Thinking in 2009 as being back markers they have now cemented themselves in the midfield fight.

7) Sauber - Bad mid season pace did not help their cause, but strong last runs showed they had the drivers and the pace for good results.

8) Lotus Renault GP - It started so well, but high profile driver replacements and dropping pace have seen them drop in my expectations. Along with the rumours of Kubica and having just revealed Raikkonen will race for them in 2012 its an odd choice, we will have to see.

9) Team Lotus - I placed them ahead of Williams due to their pace with Kovalainen ahead of the Williams drivers at some races. They will now be called "team caterham" but they actually did an impressive job, 2012 will be better.

10) Williams F1 Team - Well, its been disappointing with only 5 points, an age behind the other teams. 2012 will see if they can deliver again after some major inner team changes.

11) Marussia Virgin Racing - Jerome and Glock had some good results in their own respects but some bad results behind HRT have meant they can not go any higher, obviously.

12) HRT F1 - Finally HRT, still at the back but much improved on 2010. They need to step up however and with the experience of De La Rosa in 2012 it could bring them closer.

I think you've been a bit unfair to Alonso, who has done brilliantly in the Ferrari this year. Apart from Silverstone, when the team took the advantage under the strange rule conditions, he has been fighting with the McLarens and (on occasion) the Red Bulls. I reckon he should be fourth at least, maybe even ahead of Webber.

Yeah, hugely unfair on Alonso. In my opinion he's been the 2nd best driver this year.

Also, just because Chandhok's a nice guy doesn't mean he should get a race seat :D
