Ferrari president Luca Di Montezemelo has told journalists his driver Felipe Massa must "prove himself" if he wants to be kept in the team for 2013. Massa has had a string of poor performances in 2011 and has not even visited the podium.
After a disappointing 2011 season Massa has been told by senior staff at the Ferrari team to "prove himself" in 2012 if he wants to retain his seat for the following season. His current contract runs out at the end of 2012 but with positions so desperate and so many talented young drivers queuing out of the door Massa could possibly even see himself moving away from F1 all together.
There is no doubt Massa has been a good driver. Flashes of speed in the midfield were seen as he battled in the Sauber and his near miss at the 2008 title was an impressive feat, but after the 2009 season were he had to miss the last part of the year due to an injury sustained at the Hungarian Grand Prix he hasn't been the same.
Montezemelo commented on his expectations for 2012 saying "We expect great things from him in 2012, and then we'll decide how to proceed. Let's say he'll have to prove himself." He then said he would give the team overall a "five which i will raise to a six considering the effort and the victory at Silverstone," out of ten. Could someone be dragging the score down?
The last round of the season is coming up on the 27th of November, go vote in the predictions poll which is running in the sidebar. Also the issue of Final Sector's Brazilian Grand Prix preview will arrive this week.
We will have to see how the 2012 season will go before judging whether he should stay or go, but with so many young drivers vying for a seat at the historic team it cant be long before we wave goodbye to Felipe baby.
