It is thought the deal is a 2 year stretch as the team look for not only a Spanish but heavily experienced driver. De La Rosa has competed in over 80 Grand Prix's and has tested for numerous teams in a number of different ways. He was last in the F1 circle after a 1 off race in Canada in 2011 for Sauber, while also competed for them in 14 races of the season in 2010 before being dropped.

The 40 year old said "This is a very important step in my sporting career, I'm at a very good stage in terms of maturity and am prepared to take on this challenge."

Team boss Colin Kolles said: "The addition of Pedro de la Rosa for next year will be a fundamental foundation in the development of our project."

He also added "We are a young team that needs to continue progressing and with this incorporation I am convinced that we will do just that. Apart from being a great person he is an experienced driver as his career and prestige in F1 prove."

As Kolles said the team are young and De La Rosa's experience will be vital to move forward. Pedro, who raced in his debut season in 1999, will be a good, if strange and randomly picked, addition to the team but i understand the reasoning, he has been a big part of Mclaren's test team and has experience and knowledge which will benefit them.

The HRT deal obviously shocked a number of people as it was trending in the UK on twitter. With only a small minority of teams already confirming their drivers for 2012 it is quite early on to confirm.
