World Series By Renault at Silverstone

I recently went on a trip to Silverstone, my 4th time at the track, to watch the World Series By Renault championships. It was a great day and the atmosphere was alive for the big 3.5 race. I only went on Sunday and sat at the Woodcote section, and had a great view of the Wellington Straight, Luffield and Woodcote as well as part of the start-finish straight.

I went to the event with my Dad, Grandad and Cousin and we all enjoy Motorsport in different ways. Dad and Grandad are very analytical and like looking at the cars, I enjoy the racing, watching the cars and how they behave, and my cousin David loves the spins, overtakes and crashes.
It was a great day especially for it being free. What did you think if you went?

Race 1 on Saturday of the 3.5 World Series Renault Championship was won by Robert Wickens in the Marussia Virgin styled Carlin car, and the win catapulted him into the championship lead. Second was Daniel Ricciardo, The recent F1 driver overtaking American Rossi on lap 20 to close to within 2 seconds of Wickins, but could do no more. Third was Rossi and 4th came Nathanael Berthon ahead of Albert Costa. Jean-Eric Vergne was unable to start the race in 7th, and had to begin the race from the pit lane after an engine problem. He raced to 13th but lost his Championship lead.

Race 2 on Sunday, the one i watched from woodcote, was won yet again by the Candadian driver Robert Wickens. He led comfortably home Rossi, who rose from 6th to 2nd after an early pit stop. The second win of the weekend for Wickens led to the championship lead changing after a faultless weekend and full points. Carlin secured the team championship with former leader of the drivers standings Vergne finishing in 5th. 3rd was Ricciardo after a strong weekend, with 4th going to Nathanael Berthon after a long first stint.

The support races on sunday where good too, with Robin Frijns taking the Euro Formula Renault 2.0 series win. The UK Formula Renault 2.0 win went to Alex Lynn who finished with a comfortable lead. Even more impressive was his second place in the Euro series race. In the Megane race it was a dominant victory for Comini who also clinched the title.

The F1 2011 Lotus Renault GP car made an appearance numerous times as well as a stunt show.

Overall it was a good day out, and for free, what more could you ask for?

Here is some footage filmed by my cousin of the racing : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BXTAXnd66Q8
