McLaren’s Fernando Alonso and Ferrari’s Kimi Raikkonen set the pace on each of the two test days at the track.

Alonso put in the quickest time on Tuesday with a 1m31.290. The Spaniard was one of two drivers to complete over 100 laps of running.

The session was disrupted midway through the afternoon after a gust of wind flew a plank of wood of the starting gantry over the main straight, but fortunately no cars were on track at the time.

Alonso managed 105 laps in total and put in his best time on the super-soft tyre, finishing 1.5 seconds clear of Mercedes’ Esteban Ocon. Last year’s GP3 champion managed 123 laps – the most of the day – and set his quickest time in the dry morning session conditions on the medium tyre.

It was the DTM racer’s track debut with current constructors’ championship leaders Mercedes, with the Frenchman also a reserve driver at Renault.

Rain showers and damp conditions in the afternoon meant the vast majority of the field set their quickest times in the morning and were unable to beat them.

Williams development driver Alex Lynn was third fastest, a further 1.6 seconds behind Ocon, with Ferrari junior Charles Leclerc next up, only completing 19 laps.

Force India’s development driver Nikita Mazepin was fifth, ahead of Toro Rosso racer Carlos Sainz Jr. and Haas junior driver Santino Ferrucci.

Mercedes was granted permission to run a 2014 car at the test to complete running with Pirelli. Pascal Wehrlein drove the W05 and was eighth, ahead of his Manor team-mate Rio Haryanto.

Renault test driver Sergey Sirotkin was eighth, while Red Bull junior and GP2 race winner Pierre Gasly rounded out the results – the Frenchman completing a trial with the halo cockpit protector during the day.

Raikkonen took over Ferrari’s 2016 car for Wednesday’s running and set the pace with a late lap on the soft tyre, putting in a 1m30.665. He finished half a second clear of Mercedes development driver Ocon, who completed the most laps again on day two with 139.

Gasly bounced back from some reliability difficulties for Red Bull on day one to finish third on the second day of testing, managing 103 laps and going third. Force India’s Mazepin was fourth, with McLaren reserve Stoffel Vandoorne fifth.

Valtteri Bottas took over the FW38 and was sixth, completing a late run with the double-decker rear wing first seen at the Barcelona in-season test. Ferrucci remained in the Haas and was seventh, ahead of Renault’s Jolyon Palmer, who finished 2.6 seconds off the pace.

Formula 3 racer Sergio Sette Camara got his first taste of F1 with Toro Rosso and ended the day ninth quickest after completing 82 laps.

Jordan King enjoyed his third outing with Manor and was 10th, with Wehrlein continuing his Pirelli 2017 development work with the 2014 Mercedes and finishing 11th.

Best combined times:
  1. Kimi Raikkonen – Ferrari – 1m30.665 – soft
