Felipe Massa surprisingly dropped out of qualifying in Q1, finishing just behind Palmer and ahead of Marcus Ericsson, Felipe Nasr, Pascal Wehrlein and Rio Haryanto.

Nico Hulkenberg and Jenson Button just missed out on Q3 and were joined in the drop-zone by Daniil Kvyat, Grosjean, Magnussen and Gutierrez.

Sunday

But then the safety car was deployed after Hamilton and Rosberg collided at Turn 4, turning the race on its head.

A strong first lap saw Button leapfrog several drivers, including his team-mate Alonso, to run in the top 10.

Ricciardo led the way early on, with Verstappen in second and Sainz in third, before the Ferrari duo moved up the order.
