Sebastian Vettel set the pace for Ferrari on the opening day of the Barcelona in-season test, putting in a 1:23.220 in the afternoon session on the soft tyre.

Nico Rosberg was just one tenth further back, with Mercedes putting in the most laps of the day. He lapped the track 119 times, 16 more than Vettel.

Jenson Button ended the morning fastest for McLaren on the super-soft tyre but he fell to third by the end of the day. A late ultra-soft tyre run for Romain Grosjean saw him move up to fourth.

Pascal Wehrlein was fifth for Manor with 86 laps completed, finishing one tenth ahead of Daniel Ricciardo in the Red Bull RB12.

Pierre Gasly made another appearance for Toro Rosso during testing. The GP2 driver was seventh quickest. Alfonso Celis Jr was back at the wheel of the Force India VJM09 and ended the day eighth overall.

GP2 racer and Williams development driver Alex Lynn was ninth and his early runs caught the attention of many.

The Grove-based outfit’s car featured a double-decker rear wing and unusual front wing aero parts, to simulate the higher downforce levels of 2017. Esteban Ocon completed the timesheets for Renault.

Max Verstappen took over Red Bull’s running on the second and final day of the Barcelona test, putting in the quickest time with a 1:23.267.

The Spanish GP race winner completed 118 laps in total on Wednesday. Stoffel Vandoorne was at the wheel of the McLaren MP4-31 and was second, almost eight tenths behind.

Wehrlein switched over from Manor to Mercedes. He was a late call-up, with Ocon originally scheduled to drive for the current championship leaders. Wehrlein was third quickest.

Esteban Gutierrez was fourth quickest for Haas, with Ferrari young driver and GP3 racer Antonio Fuoco in fifth. Daniil Kvyat was sixth for his new Toro Rosso team, managing 116 laps despite stopping late on and causing a brief red flag.

Celis Jr was back in the Force India for a second consecutive day and ended the afternoon seventh. Kevin Magnussen was in the Renault and set the eighth best time, two seconds behind the pacesetter.

Felipe Massa took over Williams’ running and finished ninth. He was just one of two drivers not to reach the 100-lap mark, the other behind Jordan King in the Manor, who ended the day slowest of the 10 runners.
