It was a busy opening day at the Spanish circuit, with nine teams and 10 drivers taking part.

Felipe Nasr, Pascal Wehrlein - testing for Force India - and Susie Wolff were the first drivers to take to the track for the morning session. Lewis Hamilton soon joined them and set the opening timed lap, with a 1:59.512.

His early effort was quickly beaten by Pastor Maldonado, but the Venezuelan caused the first red flag of the morning after stopping with a reliability problem between turns five and six.

Jenson Button briefly moved to the front, before his time was bettered by Kimi Raikkonen. However, just an hour after the first red flag, Maldonado stopped the session once again by parking his car at turn four.

Hamilton managed just 11 laps before cutting short his running due to a fever. Wehrlein, who is Mercedes' reserve driver, switched teams just before the lunch break. He was replaced at Force India by Sergio Perez.

McLaren called it a day just before lunch after Button's MP4-30 suffered a MGU-K problem. Nasr ended the morning fastest for Sauber with a 1:27.307 on the medium tyre compound. Despite spending most of the session in the pits, Daniel Ricciardo was second and Maldonado was third.

Following a one-hour break for lunch, Raikkonen was the first driver back out on track. He immediately moved to the top of the timesheets, before finding more time to put in a 1:25.598.

The red flag re-appeared 40 minutes into the afternoon session, after contact between Nasr and Wolff at turn five. Both cars suffered considerable damage. Once testing resumed, Ricciardo and Maldonado set personal bests to move up the order.

Maldonado then jumped to the top spot with a 1:25.011 on the soft tyre, ending the day fastest. Despite stopping on track several times, he completed 69 laps. Raikkonen was third, one and a half tenths further back, after a largely trouble-free day.

Ricciardo was third for Red Bull, with Perez in fourth after taking over the Force India VJM07. The team's 2015 car will debut at the next test. Incredibly, both Nasr and Wolff were able to return to the track before the end of the day. Nasr caused a red flag in the closing minutes but remained fifth.

Max Verstappen completed the most laps, 94, and finished sixth. Button was seventh, with Wehrlein taking up the eighth and ninth spots on the timesheets after a busy day driving for two different teams. Wolff was 10th after managing 86 laps, with Hamilton falling to 11th.
