Three new teams interested in F1 entry for 2015?

In December last year, the FIA announced that it was asking potential new teams to express an interest in joining the grid for the 2015 season.

According to a report by German publication AMuS, three potential outfits are battling to be the 12th team on the grid. Full applications need to be submitted by February 10th, with a decision being made on February 28th.

The report claims Stefan GP (who failed to claim a place in 2010), a group headed up by former Force India and HRT boss Colin Kolles and NASCAR team co-owner Gene Haas are the candidates in contention.

Stefan Grand Prix was a proposed Serbian team who failed to be selected for a slot on the 2010 grid alongside Virgin Racing, Lotus Racing and Hispania Racing F1 Team. They applied to join the grid in 2011 as well, but they were rejected once again.

The team, named after creator Zoran Stefanović, had in fact tried to gain entry to the sport back in 1996 and 1997, but with no success. They planned to run ex-Toyota cars in the 2010 championship, with Kazuki Nakajima and Jacques Villeneuve at the wheel, but of course these plans soon fell apart.

Colin Kolles previously has held the team principal position at teams like Jordan, Force India and HRT, and now it looks like he is getting involved in a new Romanian-funded project that is bidding for the 12th team slot.

Reports suggest some state-owned companies are behind the project and that Kolles wouldn't take up the role of owner or team principal, being more of a supplier to the team.

The final - and most high profile - interested entrant for the 2015 Formula 1 world championship is NASCAR team owner Gene Haas, who confirmed in a statement that an official entry has been lodged with the FIA.

Haas currently co-owns Stewart-Haas Racing with driver Tony Stewart, winning the NASCAR Spring Cup title together in 2011.

"We have responded to the FIA’s ‘call for expression of interest’ regarding a Formula One entry on behalf of Haas Racing Development," the 61-year-old said. "We respect the FIA’s evaluation process and will share more details in the coming weeks."

F1 media are reporting that Haas is working with former Red Bull and Jaguar technical director Guenther Steiner, who runs a composite facility in North Carolina, on the project.

The last attempt to get a team from the United States on the grid came from USF1 back in 2009. It was handed a position on the 2010 grid but it was forced to shut down operations and cancel plans to race in the sport due to financial issues.

Bernie Ecclestone recently said that he has been in contact with two potential new teams.
