In an interview with Brazilian website totalrace.com, Toro Rosso team principal Franz Tost revealed that da Costa is in contention for a drive with them next season.

The Portuguese driver is currently racing in the Formula Renault 3.5 series and sits fifth in the standings so far after 11 rounds. He finished third in last year's GP3 series and has won championships in Formula Renault.

Should Ricciardo move over to Red Bull, a vacant seat would emerge at the squad's junior team alongside Jean-Eric Vergne - who is expected to stay on at the Faenza based outfit.

Tost revealed that da Costa - who is part of the Red Bull Racing young driver programme - is next in line.

He said: "Antonio Felix da Costa is one of the candidates, but let's wait for the decision of Red Bull and, if they take Daniel, we assess who will be the choice for our second seat."

He completed running for both Red Bull and Toro Rosso at the recent Silverstone Young Driver Test and admitted that his aim for next season is to step up to F1.

However the decision all hangs on whether Daniel Ricciardo manages to nab the vacant Red Bull seat - thanks to Mark Webber retiring from F1 - from Kimi Raikkonen.
