The Venezuelan made contact with the Marussia of Max Chilton on the run to the tight Tabac corner, becoming airborne. When his Williams FW35 eventually touched down, it headed straight for the barrier and at quite a speed.

Maldonado managed to clamber out of the car unscathed, but Claire Williams revealed to Sky Sports F1 during the resulting red flag period that he was understandably shaken.

Speaking about the accident after the race, he said "It was an unfortunate incident today with the Marussia car and the impact was quite big. Fortunately I am okay and the stewards took immediate action."

He added "We need to move on from a disappointing weekend but I'm looking forward to the next race in Canada, where we will be continuing to demonstrate the improvements in the car."

The severity of the crash was underlined by the emergence of the red flag. The speed and force of the crash caused the TECPRO barrier to fly back out and into the race track where it was then collected by Jules Bianchi, causing his retirement from the race.

Chilton was given a drive-through penalty after the race for causing the crash after he moved right, pushing Maldonado into the wall and causing the consequential crash. He respected the stewards decision and took the blame for the incident, but admitted that it tainted what had been a good race for him.
