Massa retains seat for 2013

Felipe Massa's future at Ferrari has been one of the summer's hottest topics, but now it has been confirmed that he will stay with the team for the 2013 season.

After Stefano Domenicali dropped hints during the Korean Grand Prix weekend, the deal was confirmed on Tuesday after a meeting to decide his future.

Massa's place in the team came under huge speculation after a less than spectacular start to the season; however a recent boost in pace has helped him keep his seat.

Massa discussed his future with Autosport earlier in the week, and when asked if he had any doubts that he would not be at Ferrari in 2013 he replied "No. I don't have. But anyway we wait for the time. When you get the OK from both directions that is when you are sure. I think it will be pretty soon to be honest."

It was confirmed on Tuesday that Felipe would partner Fernando Alonso at Ferrari for next year. Felipe signed a 1 year contract extension with the team, that has started getting the 2014 driver market buzzing. Some are saying 2010 and 2011 world champion Sebastian Vettel could partner Alonso after Massa's contract runs out.

Massa said on the contract signing  "I want to thank president Montezemolo and [team principal] Stefano Domenicali, who gave me confidence which I have always maintained, even in the most difficult moments."

Domenicali added on the retaining of the Brazilian "We have always supported Felipe, even in the most difficult moments of his career. We are confident of its value, and that he will repay the trust that has been renewed."

Fernando Alonso tweeted his thoughts on the news, saying "I am so happy to continue another year with @Felipe1Massa as a team-mate! I'm sure we are the best team! #ForzaFerrari

"After eight different teammates.. Felipe staying is another example of what I always say; do not believe anything you read, unless it's official."

Nico Hulkenberg had been tipped to replace Massa at Ferrari, with some even suggesting the deal had already been done. However it now looks like the German is set to move to Sauber, after Massa's contract extension.

Personally, I think it is great that Ferrari have the confidence in him and have extended his contract. He is not a bad driver, he is pretty good as we all saw in 2008 but the problem is that he is alongside arguably the best F1 racer in the world. He has the speed and pace, so if Ferrari can produce a car which he can get to grips with then it is a wise move. Also, why not let the possible replacements get more experience under there belts (Hulkenberg, Di Resta etc).
