McLaren have reportedly contacted Sergio Perez, discussing a possible deal.
The F1 2012 silly season is in full flow, with the rumours of Hamilton ditching Mclaren for Mercedes opening up a number of possibilities. Earlier in the week. reports suggested Kovalainen could move to McLaren despite Whitmarsh saying the team has "No plan B", meaning plan "A" is to retain Hamilton.
A report from the Daily Mail claims the Woking squad is lining up possible replacements, should Hamilton leave.
Perez has impressed in 2012 so far, in only his second season in the spot. He has stood on the podium on 3 occasions and has consistently out raced his more experienced team mate. Sergio also currently lies 9th in the drivers championship. However Ferrari were also reported to be eyeing up a deal, with the Mexican being a member of the Ferrari Driver Academy. It seems he is in high demand.
McLaren are reportedly not wanting to be "outmanoeuvred" by Hamilton and his management company and are possibly getting tired of the on going negotiations.
So where should Perez go? The safest option for him is to stay at Sauber, who will surely want to keep him on board. More experience is key for Sergio's future, so staying with his current team would enable him to improve and get better for possible moves in 2014.
Of course he has shown incredible speed, which is why McLaren are looking into a deal with him. Perez has the pace and potential to challenge for titles, so moving across to Woking would make sense because he can win races for them. That is for sure. Whether he can help McLaren get that constructors title alongside Button is another story, because Hamilton would fit that bill.
Perez has stiff competition if he wants to move across to Ferrari in the future, but Ferrari president Luca di Montezemolo has revealed Perez is "too inexperienced" for a seat at the Italian team. He said "Perez is a good driver but to drive a Ferrari you need more experience, I think he is one of the potential best young drivers for the future, but before putting a young driver in a Ferrari I need [to see] more experience and more results."
This could suggest that should McLaren call, he could leave the driver academy to take the spare seat. However reports also suggest Di Resta or Kovalainen could be possible replacements, for Hamilton but all these rumours are taking peoples attention off the racing. This is unavoidable in F1 because the off track politics will always be a big part of the sport.
Hamilton is remaining tight lipped over his future, meaning many people have started to speculate on possible replacements, but Lewis could just not move. The racing in Singapore will surely be over shadowed by the silly season rumours, so speculation will always be hovering around.
