The title of this piece could be deceiving. Williams has been a team which continues to fall lower down in the results and 2011 saw its worst year, with press and news pushing the team into a shadowed corner. The only headline they could get would be a poor performance or driver error which to be honest was common in 2011.
Now rumours have surrounded the team for a number of weeks. They confirmed Pastor Maldonado, known in 2011 as a rookie with a habit for collecting the barrier, in early November as their 1st driver but the 2nd has yet to be revealed. A number of driver's are vying for the seat and it could prove to be a life line which they all desperately need.
Williams have been creating the headlines over the Christmas period as F1 news fizzled out. They have now become the main focus on the press and media as speculation rises. They only have 1 space remaining and a number of drivers are interested. Here are the candidates:
Rubens Barrichello is a F1 veteran with 11 wins under his belt. The 322 starts he has made in F1 make him a formidable force. After a dismal 2011 season he is keen to make his 20th season in the sport a good one, meaning he wants the final seat. He has been rumoured to be close to a deal with the team but it is yet been confirmed. Rubens has spent 2 seasons with the British based team so far and is keen to retain his seat. It is very true that experience helps make a better car but we will have to see what the end decision is.
It has been kept as no secret that Bruno Senna visited the Williams factory back in December of 2011. After being kicked out of his role at the now Lotus team he has been left without a seat. He replaced Nick Heidfeld in 2011 and qualified an incredible 7th at the Belgian Grand Prix, but he could never retain the pace in the race. It is no given secret either that Senna has a good amount of sponsorship and a following all over the world, partly his racing and partly his Uncle Ayrton, which Williams could well need. Barrichello is in the favoured position but Williams could do with the funds and Senna has proved that he can race well.
Adrian Sutil was booted from his Force India spot, and replaced by Nico Hulkenberg, after a pretty impressive 2011. Best of the rest spots in Germany and Brazil cemented a solid year for the Germany driver. He now has been on the eye for a role in F1, whether a test or race role. Rumours over the German's future increased after a possible move to Ferrari in 2013 was suggested, but those were quickly shot down. He also has not kept it a secret that the Williams seat could be an option. In early December he said "Williams is certainly one of the teams that have a seat." but admitted that nothing has been confirmed. His 2011 performance could make him a strong contender for the remaining seat but Frank Williams and the main figures at Williams will have to be the judges of that.
Frank Williams has a tough job on his hands. He could throw any of these drivers, and even more, a life line and save them from the F1 sidelines. Its not the end of their careers that's for sure but it could mean the difference between being in F1, and leaving.
Williams lose title sponsor AT&T
It was confirmed on Wednesday the 4th January 2012 that Williams have parted company with their title sponsor AT&T. They have had the American multinational telecommunications corporation sponsoring them but the deal has ended after 5 years. It was suspected earlier in the week after Williams removed the firm from their Logo, Website and Partnership pages. They are now looking for a new title sponsor.
