Google+ Jack Leslie F1: Interview 2: Ilaria Costanzo

Interview 2: Ilaria Costanzo

My second interview in this 3 part series See's a different perspective. Ilaria is a big F1 and Ferrari fan due to her being Italian. Along with her being an F1 fan she also writes a popular blog called http://ilariaf1blog.wordpress.com/ . What's even more impressive is that it combines 2 languages, English and Italian.

I asked Ilaria the same questions as I did in the previous interview, but with very different results.

Here is the interview:

1) What an amazing season, what has been your main highlight which has stood out above all the rest?

This season has been amazing. Even though Sebastian dominated the whole season, every race was still as exciting as ever. Obviously, the race I'll remember above all the others is Monza, because I saw it live. Seeing my favourite driver Fernando finishing third and on the podium was unforgettable, especially because in the last lap I didn't know if he was able to stay in front of Hamilton, since I was in a little crowd waiting for the gates of the track to open. I appreciated even Jenson and Sebastian, who I like very much too; it was emotional to see Vettel crying on the podium!

2) If you had to give the award "driver of the season" to some one, who would it be?

This is a very difficult question. it's clear that Sebastian had a brilliant season, it was perfect and consistent. But I think Button and Alonso deserve a mention too: Jenson...Oh, I've totally changed my mind about him: he demonstrated a huge talent and consistency, he was very strong, And obviously Fernando: I think this has been the best season for him (even he said so), because he managed to do superb races with the McLarens and, sometimes, the RBR, when the car was quite bad. I'm really impressed by these three drivers, I couldn't choose one, sorry!

3) The Grand Prix's have been a mix of predictable, mad and dramatic, what would you say has been the best race this season and why?

Very difficult again. Some will say Canada, Silverstone, Monza...I would say Monaco. The atmosphere was fantastic and the race was different from all the others, with Sebastian, Fernando and Jenson so close together. It was interesting, the beginning of the Massa-Hamilton drama, and the final conclusion.

4) If you could combine 3 sectors from all the tracks of the 2011 season together, which sectors would you choose and why?

I would combine Sector one of Spa, sector two of Monaco and sector three of Monza.

5) What is your view on the new 2011 features? DRS, KERS and Pirelli?

First of all, Pirelli. I think they did an incredible job, the tyres were perfect and made the race very exciting. DRS was good too, but actually sometimes it made the overtaking too artificial, and drivers couldn't simply defend their position. Last year the problem was the lack of overtaking, remember for example last Hungary GP when Alonso, who was clearly slower than Vettel but managed to stay in front of him, this year he couldn't defend from the fastest car on track. And finally KERS, which I think was not very important during the race, but I appreciate it a lot, because it demonstrates how important innovation is in F1, and make safe energy; very important for the common cars too, which take the best inventions of this sport.

6) Do you think the new features have been successful and proved their purpose?

Yes, I think DRS and Pirelli were the main, because KERS was already introduced in 2009 at Ferrari and so for me it was clear about its function; but, as I said before, DRS is, in my opinion, too influential in overtaking, it now seem a bit too easy.

7) With so many rumours surrounding the driver market, if you had to choose a driver to leave F1 and a driver to come into it who would they be?

I think it's time for Liuzzi to go, and I would pick Luca Filippi from GP2, he showed great talent! And he's Italian!

8) Firstly i am a big fan of your blog, what are the plans for the future and do you want this to be the start of a career?

Thanks! Even tough I'm extremely busy this month, I'd like to keep writing my articles, maybe obtaining to write so much guest articles like you Jack! But seriously, I really want to reach my target, and finally write for a newspaper and travel as a reporter in F1. Fingers crossed, but most of all, hard work until the end!
