Mclaren's Jenson Button had signed a deal for a "multi-year contract" after saying "I've never felt more at home at a team than I do at McLaren. I've won four of the greatest races of my life here, I'm currently lying second in the drivers' championship and I feel I'm driving better than ever."

The 31 year old's contract expires at the end of 2012 but now will be extended to many years beyond that. Button is the only one who could mathematically take the drivers title this year, but it is highly unlikely with Sebastian Vettel just 1 point away from being crowned.

2011 has been a great year for the Brit overall, with two stunning wins in Canada and Hungary, and with numerous podiums he will be going into the Japanese Grand Prix weekend feeling confident, after a run of 4 consecutive podiums.

Jenson has seen interest from other teams such as Ferrari for future drives, but feels he is in the "strongest position to challenge for wins and titles" in his current team. He is currently 17 points ahead of his team mate Lewis Hamilton who is happy about Buttons decision,
"It's great news that Jenson has chosen to stay. Jenson has been a great person to work with, and a genuine team-player, from the moment we welcomed him on board. Jenson and I are as hungry and as ambitious as ever to win races and world championships in the future."

Team boss Martin Whitmarsh was pleased with the decision, saying
Team principal Martin Whitmarsh added: "Jenson is a great driver and a great guy. In fact, I can safely say that he's one of the most capable and respected drivers we've ever had, and I'm therefore absolutely delighted that he'll continue to work with us into the future. I feel sure that he'll now build on the considerable success he's already achieved with us, and will be even more successful with us in years to come."
