Jenson Button suffered a disappointing session, with problems interrupting his running. He finished down in 19th.

Hamilton was investigated for an unsafe release during FP3 but he was let off. If he had picked up a reprimand, it would have been his third and that would've resulted in a penalty.

Kevin Magnussen was the first to be eliminated in the first segment of qualifying, with Pascal Wehrlein, Daniil Kvyat, Rio Haryanto, Felipe Nasr and Marcus Ericsson next up.

Esteban Gutierrez dropped out of Q2 along with Button, Carlos Sainz Jr., Fernando Alonso, Romain Grosjean and Jolyon Palmer.
