It was the 29th F1 event to take place in the country, which debuted on the calendar in 1964 at the Zeltweg track.

Following a short break after F1’s arrival in Baku, Azerbaijan, the series returned to the Red Bull Ring, with the weekend being the first of four rounds taking place within the space of just five weeks.

FP1
Nico Rosberg set the pace in an eventful first practice session for the Austrian GP, putting in a 1m07.373 on the soft tyre.

He finished three tenths clear of Mercedes team-mate and championship rival Lewis Hamilton, who was one of several drivers who suffered spins in FP1.

The Ferrari duo of Sebastian Vettel and Kimi Raikkonen were third and fourth. Daniel Ricciardo finished fifth quickest, with Felipe Massa and Max Verstappen next up.

Verstappen lost out on track time during the session after damaging his Red Bull on the new exit kerbs. Daniil Kvyat and Valtteri Bottas rounded out the top 10.

Romain Grosjean and Nico Hulkenberg were 11th and 12th, with the second Force India being driven by Alfonso Celis Jr., who finished 22nd.

FP2
Rosberg remained quickest in the 90-minute afternoon session, with a best time of 1m07.967. He just beat Hamilton by 0.019 seconds.

The quickest time was set just prior to a sudden heavy rain shower, which meant there was no running for around 40 minutes. But it soon dried out enough for slicks later in FP2.

Hulkenberg moved up to third place in the closing stages, with Vettel having to settle for second after a spin late on. Ricciardo, Carlos Sainz Jr., Verstappen and Raikkonen were next up.

Bottas and Jenson Button rounded out the top 10. Fernando Alonso, Massa, Kvyat and Sergio Perez – who returned to action after Celis took over his car in FP1 – finished in the positions 11 to 14.

FP3
Vettel ended third and final practice for the Austrian Grand Prix in first place with a 1m07.098, leading team-mate Raikkonen by just over one tenth of a second.

Hamilton was third but it was a difficult session for the second Mercedes car. Rosberg suffered a suspension failure on the kerbs at the exit of Turn 2 and hit the wall, bringing out the red flag.

Ricciardo was fourth, with Verstappen and Bottas next up. Massa, Hulkenberg, Button and Alonso completed the top 10.

Perez was 11th, ahead of Esteban Gutierrez, Pascal Wehrlein and Romain Grosjean. Kevin Magnussen and Kvyat were 15th and 16th quickest. Rosberg finished down in 22nd.

Rain started to fall towards the end of Q2, with drying conditions for the top 10 shoot-out. Hulkenberg was one of the stars of the session and will line up second on the grid, after finishing Q3 third.

Vettel was fourth but he will drop five places due to a gearbox change. Button was fifth fastest but will be promoted to third for Sunday’s race.

Raikkonen was sixth quickest in Q3 but will move up to fourth, finishing ahead of Ricciardo, Bottas, Verstappen and Massa.

The rain showers late in the second segment meant drivers were unable to improve their times in the final minutes.

Gutierrez was the first to be eliminated in 11th, with Wehrlein impressing in 12th place. Grosjean and Alonso were next up while Sainz and Perez did not set times, the former suffering an engine issue.

Kevin Magnussen was the first out in Q1, with Jolyon Palmer 18th and the Manor of Rio Haryanto 19th.

Kvyat suffered a suspension failure at the exit of the penultimate corner and crashed out, finishing 20th. Marcus Ericsson and Felipe Nasr will complete the grid.

The two drivers made contact at Turn 2, after Rosberg had a slow exit from the first corner. Hamilton tried a move around the outside but Rosberg turned in late and the two collided.

Hamilton went on to finish 5.7 seconds clear of Verstappen, who used a strong strategy to steadily move up the order as the race progressed.

Raikkonen completed the podium for Ferrari after a relatively quiet run to the flag. Rosberg suffered damage in the contact and he fell to fourth place. Ricciardo and Button battled closely for fifth place, with the Red Bull driver emerging ahead.

Button scored a positive result for McLaren after starting third on the grid and holding onto second in the early laps. He lost ground in the opening stint but a safety car for Vettel’s damaged Ferrari helped him claim back positions.

Vettel suffered a right-rear puncture on the main straight and spun into the inside wall, retiring from the race. Grosjean benefitted from late problems for rival drivers to finish seventh for Haas, ahead of Sainz in the Toro Rosso.

After starting from the pits due to a chassis and gearbox change, his team-mate Kvyat suffered another tough day with an early retirement.

Bottas had to hold off a feisty Wehrlein in the closing stages but just held onto ninth, with Wehrlein settling for 10th and his first point in Formula 1.

Gutierrez and Palmer were next up, with Nasr racing in the midfield in the middle of the race before falling back to 13th. Magnussen and Ericsson were 14th and 15th, with Haryanto rounding out the results.

Perez went off on the final lap and beached his car in the Turn 3 gravel, while Alonso and Hulkenberg were also late retirements due to reliability woes. Massa also failed to finish.
