Top 10 moments from F1 2015

The F1 2015 season featured many memorable moments, from overtakes to mistakes, great performances and surprises.

With the winter break now underway and Christmas fast approaching, here are my top 10 moments from this year’s F1 action.

10. Williams back at the front

The opening lap at Silverstone was a refreshing change and a popular one too. The Williams duo of Felipe Massa and Valtteri Bottas had storming starts to jump the two Mercedes drivers, and the battles continued through the early stages.

The Hungarian Grand Prix was packed full of surprises and was one of the best races of the season. From the Mercedes drivers hitting trouble, to brave overtakes, stunning performances and a mixed-up result, it had pretty much everything.

8. Singing in the rain
The qualifying delay at the United States Grand Prix sparked some hilarious and funny moments, as drivers and teams tried to entertain themselves and the fans before the session was eventually postponed. We had Daniel Ricciardo and Daniil Kvyat dancing, Sauber mechanics racing up and down the pit lane in a box on wheels and pranks.

7. Monaco pit blunder

One of the biggest shocks of 2015 was the Safety Car pit stop in Monaco that cost Lewis Hamilton victory. The mistake by the two-time champion and his Mercedes team came as quite a surprise, confused many and showed how split-second decisions can ruin races.

6. Grosjean on the podium

Romain Grosjean’s charge to a podium finish from ninth on the grid at the Belgian Grand Prix was one of the best drives of the year. He was chasing down Sebastian Vettel when the German, who was trying to pit just once, suffered a puncture. Grosjean put in some great passes and was fast throughout, claiming a well-deserved first top three result of 2015.

5. Hamilton wins the title

A late shock during the rain-hit US GP saw Nico Rosberg lose the rear of his car and go off while leading the race. It gifted the victory to Hamilton and the British driver went on to claim his third world title with three rounds remaining. The events of the final laps also sparked the now famous ‘Capgate’.

4. Vettel’s first Ferrari win

This was my highlight of the first 10 races, as Sebastian Vettel droved to victory in Malaysia. Not only was it a brilliant race, full of battles, but it broke the Mercedes dominance, added a new narrative to the season and also proved Ferrari could challenge the reigning champions. It was a special win for Vettel, as it was his first with Ferrari, and emotions were high afterwards.

3. Hamilton vs Rosberg

The first corner of the US GP at the Circuit of the Americas took the inter-team tension at Mercedes to new levels. Having pushed Rosberg wide in Japan, Hamilton did the same thing in Austin, dropping his team-mate back. The light contact clearly frustrated Rosberg and fuelled a great performance, only to throw it away in the closing stages.

2. Verstappen on the attack
Max Verstappen was one of the stars of 2015. His overtakes and ballsy racing produced some stunning on-track action and it was tough to pick a favourite overtake. However, I decided my second best moment of the year was his pass on Felipe Nasr at the Belgian Grand Prix around the outside at Blanchimont and into the final chicane.

1. Alonso catches some rays
It may not have been an on-track moment, but Fernando Alonso sitting on a chair in Interlagos during Q1 for the Brazilian Grand Prix, topping up his tan was hilarious.
It became even more so when it sparked the #PlacesAlonsoWouldRatherBe trend.
