The German driver dominated the race, but it was his Red Bull team-mate Mark Webber hitching a lift with Alonso that proved to be the most memorable moment.

Vettel’s run of success continued in Singapore, taking pole position on Saturday. He lost the lead briefly to Nico Rosberg on lap one but soon moved back into first place. He quickly pulled away from the Mercedes driver and had a five-second advantage by the third tour.

Despite the deployment of the Safety Car on lap 23 after Daniel Ricciardo crashed, Vettel still won the race by 32 seconds. Alonso moved up the order to finish second, with Kimi Raikkonen in third for Lotus.

Rosberg slipped to fourth and Lewis Hamilton was fifth in the second Mercedes car. Webber was running well within the top six in the closing stages of the race when he picked up a problem, radioing Red Bull to say he was “in trouble”.

He tried getting his car to the finish but when the flames appeared, he retired on the last lap. The Australian managed to catch a lift with Alonso, after the Spaniard stopped on his way back to the pits at Turn 7 to pick up him.

He was perched on the Ferrari’s sidepod but both drivers were later reprimanded. The stewards felt Webber running across the circuit was dangerous and because it was his third reprimand of the 2013 season, he picked up a 10-place grid penalty for the following round in Korea.
