2015 Spanish Grand Prix: Thursday

It was a busy first day back in the Formula 1 paddock, with media sessions to attend and plenty of content to post.
After only managing a few hours of sleep, it was a bright and early start at 6:30am to get ready to head to the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya.

I was really excited to be back at a race track, but also nervous too, as it always takes a little while to get back into a rhythm and settle in. After travelling to Barcelona and exploring a bit of the city – including the Montjuïc circuit – on Wednesday, it was time to get back to work.

After Luke Smith, Phil Horton and I met up with Richland F1 colleague Rosie Baillie, we headed to the circuit’s accreditation centre to pick up our media passes. It took a little longer than anticipated, but we were soon heading to the press room to get set up.

Walking into the paddock is always a great feeling – knowing you are exactly where you want to be. The media centre at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya is situated above the pit garages, providing us with a good view of the main grandstand, start/finish straight and pit lane.

Having found some seats close to the window and with as decent view of the TV monitors, I then completed the track guide for Richland F1 and covered a few things for Richland F1. We then sorted out plans for the media sessions, splitting them up so we could cover as many as possible.

A few niggles with my pass meant I missed two of my press sessions, but overall Rosie and I still completed plenty of work for Richland F1. I heard from Valtteri Bottas (who said he has not signed a pre-contract with Ferrari), Sebastian Vettel and Max Verstappen (who is hoping to find better qualifying form) and covered a number of other drivers, as they shared their thoughts on the weekend ahead.

The mood in the paddock was pretty upbeat, as the sport returned to Europe for round five of the season. The media centre was packed and the weather was lovely, which always helps when strolling around going from motorhome to motorhome.

So, in short, not a straight-forward day but still a successful one. I also spent some of the morning working on a feature about our trip to the Montjuïc circuit, which will go online next week, so stay tuned for that!

To conclude the day, Luke, Rosie and I met up with Craig and Leanne Boon from Octane Photographic (Phil joined us later after running/walking the track) for a catch-up and to discuss plans for the rest of the season. Thursday is always a busy day at the track.

Friday typically has fewer media sessions, with most taking place at the back of the garage, but of course the on-track action begins. It should be an interesting day, and there is also GP2 and GP3 to watch out for as well.
