2014 German Grand Prix: Wednesday (16th July)

Today (Wednesday 16th July) I travelled from Norfolk, England, to the state of Baden-Württemberg, Germany, for round 10 of the 2014 F1 season.
My morning started off with a 2:00am alarm, before my Dad kindly drove me to a hotel near the Dartford Bridge to meet up with Craig and Leanne Boon from Octane Photographic.

I was reunited with their extremely comfortable and very snazzy Mercedes AMG Sport E-Class Estate (after my trip to Austria for F1’s return to the Red Bull Ring) and we set off to pick up Luke Smith, F1 writer for NBC Sports and my boss at Richland F1.

After Luke had joined us, we boarded the Channel Tunnel train (or "Chunnel" as my Dad calls it), before heading through France, Belgium, The Netherlands and then, finally, Germany. We are currently staying in the city of Karlsruhe.

From my first impressions, it seems like a nice and pretty place, although the road works in the centre caused a bit of confusion getting to the hotel. There are also lots of trams. After leaving home at 2:45am, we got to the hotel at around 4:00pm local time. So the journey was a fair bit shorter than the road trip to the Red Bull Ring last month.

Along the way we discovered that Nico Rosberg has signed a Mercedes contract extension and Alexander Rossi has parted ways with Caterham and joined the Campos GP2 team. The Leafield-based outfit has also axed more than 40 staff in cost cutting measures.

It was a long day but the early start meant we were able to have a brief look around the surrounding area and stop in a restaurant to eat some food. It was my first time trying Schnitzel and I must say it was quite nice.

Tomorrow will be my second time in the F1 paddock and my third race in a row, after I attended the British Grand Prix at Silverstone on Saturday and Sunday as a fan.

Thursday is media day on a race weekend, so I will be gathering quotes from the media sessions and reporting on the latest news. Be sure to bookmark Richland F1 (which has a brand-new look) to keep up to date with everything from the Hockenheimring paddock.

I will also try and post some behind-the-scenes images on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram over the weekend so keep an eye out for those. It should be a fantastic weekend of racing, I can’t wait.
