The American, who also co-owns the Stewart-Haas NASCAR outfit, confirmed the news on Friday.

The sport's governing body opened up a tender for a 12th team in December last year. Haas announced his intentions to join the grid in January.

Following a lengthy evaluation process - to ensure Haas could commit fully to the sport financially - his application was accepted.

Haas was understandably delighted about the confirmation. However, he knows that a steep challenge awaits the team to make the grid for the 2015 season opener.

"We’re extremely pleased to have been granted a Formula 1 licence by the FIA," he said in a statement.

"It’s an exciting time for me, Haas Automation and anyone who wanted to see an American team return to Formula 1.

"Now, the really hard work begins. It’s a challenge we embrace as we work to put cars on the grid. I want to thank the FIA for this opportunity and the diligence everyone put forth to see our licence application come to fruition."

His team is the first American outfit to be granted entry to F1 since the failed USF1 project in 2010.

Further details are expected to be announced next week. It is thought that the team is looking to power a Dallara built chassis with Ferrari engines.

Bernie Ecclestone hinted over the Bahrain Grand Prix weekend that another team could also be handed an entry to F1 next year.

The FIA confirmed shortly after Haas' announcement that it was "conducting further investigations" into a 13th F1 outfit called Forza Rossa, as well as revealing some of the other decisions made at the latest World Motor Sport Council meeting.
