F1 Flashback - Button makes it three wins out of four

Jenson Button’s incredible run of success in 2009 continued in Bahrain, as he took his third win in four races.

However, the Brit didn’t qualify on pole position after the Toyota duo of Jarno Trulli and Timo Glock locked out the front row on low fuel loads.

The two white and red cars held the lead into the first corner, with Glock moving ahead of his team-mate, and managed to hold off Lewis Hamilton’s challenge after his KERS boost launched him from fifth to third at the start.

The Brit tried to pass Trulli on the first lap at turn four but braked too late and lost the position into the following corner. Button had qualified in fourth place and maintained his position on the opening lap, losing out to Hamilton but moving ahead of Sebastian Vettel – who had won the previous race in China – at turn one.

Rubens Barrichello completed an impressive overtake on Kimi Raikkonen into turn 10 on the same lap. Despite the added power boost, Hamilton couldn’t hold off Button for long and the Brawn GP driver passed his countryman into the first corner on lap two.

He then set about closing in on the two Toyotas who ran in close proximity early in the race. Trulli and Glock both pitted early due to lighter fuel loads and after several quick laps, Button also took to the pitlane. His pace was so strong that he managed to jump both drivers and emerged with a clear lead over the chasing pack.

He was never challenged and cruised across the line to win the sixth Bahrain Grand Prix. Vettel closed in by the chequered flag but could only get to within seven seconds of the Brit. He moved ahead of Hamilton at the first round of pit stops but was stuck behind the slower car of Trulli.

The German eventually moved into second place after his second trip to the pits and pushed right to the very end. Trulli dropped to third, with Hamilton and Barrichello rounding out the top five. Raikkonen and Glock had a tasty scrap for sixth, the former eventually winning, and Alonso took home the final point.

There was only one retirement in the race – Kazuki Nakajima due to an oil pressure problem. Button extended his lead in the championship and would, of course, later go on to take the title at the penultimate round in Brazil.
