The lower volume of the new engines has already been criticised by some fans as well as F1 boss Bernie Ecclestone.

Vettel retired from the 2014 season opener and was able to hear the power-units for himself from the pit wall. Ahead of the Malaysian Grand Prix, he shared his views on the new sound with reporters at the Sepang International Circuit.

"It’s s***," said the four-time world champion. "I think we have to [change it]. I was on the pit wall during the race. It’s better than in a bar. That’s my opinion.

"I think for the fans it’s not good. I think F1 has to be spectacular, and the sound is one of the most important things.

"I remember when I was a small child, I don’t remember much, but the first time I was about five years old, six years old when we went to see the cars live during free practice in Germany.

"The one thing I remember was the sound, how loud the cars actually were, and to feel the cars through the ground. The whole ground was vibrating. It’s a shame that we don’t have that any more."

His team-mate Daniel Ricciardo was more positive about the change: "Once you're at full speed you still don't hear what's going on. There's still enough noise inside our helmets to block out the rest.

"I think it's alright. It's different, something else to get used to. I'll probably have good hearing for a bit longer so I'm not really complaining."

Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton said that the sound isn't "special like it used to be" but added that it is "special in other ways".

McLaren's Jenson Button also commented ahead of the second race of the year. "Go and race something else if you're not happy," said the Brit. "As drivers we don't have an opinion where the cars are in terms of sound and feel.

"But when you cross the finish line first you've won a grand prix, so you don't care what the car sounds like or what it looks like. You've beaten the best in the world, and that's all you care about."
