The Aussie had crossed the line in second place after a storming debut for Red Bull Racing. However, his car was found to have consistently exceeded the maximum allowed fuel flow of 100kg per hour.

After a five-hour investigation, the FIA finally announced that Ricciardo has been excluded from the race for a breach of the 2014 technical regulations.

Fuel flow is now limited this season and drivers have just 100kg of fuel for a race, about one third less than 2013.

Ricciardo started the race from second on the grid and retained his position into the first turn, despite the two Mercedes W05's of Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton swapping positions.

The 24-year-old soon dropped back and despite a mid-race safety car, he crossed the line 24 seconds shy of the race winner.

Red Bull Racing said in a statement: "Following the decision of the FIA that Infiniti Red Bull Racing is in breach of Article 3.2 of the FIA Formula One Sporting Regulations and Article 5.1.4 of the FIA Formula One Technical Regulations with Car 3, the Team has notified the FIA of its intention to appeal with immediate effect.

"Inconsistencies with the FIA fuel flow meter have been prevalent all weekend up and down the pit lane. The Team and Renault are confident the fuel supplied to the engine is in full compliance with the regulations."

The news now promotes Kevin Magnussen to second, Jenson Button to third place, Fernando Alonso to fourth and Valtteri Bottas to fifth. Nico Hulkenberg moves up to sixth with Kimi Raikkonen now being classified in seventh, Jean-Eric Vergne in eighth, Daniil Kvyat in ninth and Sergio Perez to 10th.

F1 race director Charlie Whiting said prior to the race that the FIA would come down hard on teams that go over the fuel flow limit.

It now means Red Bull Racing leave Australia without a point following Sebastian Vettel's exit from the race on lap three.
