Schumacher starts "waking up process"

Michael Schumacher is gradually being brought out of a medically-induced coma, his manager has confirmed.

The seven-time F1 world champion suffered serious head injuries in a skiing accident at the end of December. He has been in a coma for one month.

Sabine Kehm's update on Thursday is the first since January 17th, where she confirmed that he remained in a "stable" condition.

Rumours of the German being eased out of the coma began to swirl at the start of the week. His former F1 teams Ferrari and Mercedes are running with messages of support on their cars during testing at Jerez.

"The family of Michael Schumacher is again requesting to respect its privacy and the medical secret, and to not disturb the doctors treating Michael in their work," read the statement.

"At the same time, the family wishes to express sincere appreciation for the world-wide sympathy.

"Michael's sedation is being reduced in order to allow the start of the waking up process which may take long time.

"For the protection of the family, it was originally agreed by the interested parties to communicate this information only once this process was consolidated."

The latest update is certainly encouraging, but there is still some way to go. My thoughts remain with Schumacher and his family.
