Nico Hulkenberg believes the level of uncertainty surrounding the up-coming season has never been higher in Formula 1.
The new regulations - which include a switch to 1.6 litre V6 Turbo engines and cuts to downforce - will give teams the chance to do something special, as well as also opening up the opportunity to get it completely wrong.
But no one knows what will happen; it is completely unpredictable at the moment. Hulkenberg is eagerly anticipating the 2014 season and feels that the sport has never seen a situation quite like it.
The 26-year-old returns to Force India this year after one season racing for rivals Sauber. He last drove for the team in 2012, after previously being recruited as their reserve driver.
"At the moment, nobody knows how this season and the new cars are going to be," he told the team's website. "There are a lot of questions which we can’t really answer until we have been on the track, running – not even the first race will be the absolute truth teller. There will be a lot of data we need to look at and analyse, work with it to go forward.
"Never before there has been a situation like this, when with just a couple of weeks before the first test nobody has any idea of where everyone is. It’s a pretty unique situation for everyone. It’s a challenge, an opportunity to do something special, but on the other hand it opens up the opportunity to do mistakes, so we will need to do our work well."
He will be joined at Force India by Sergio Perez, who was dropped by McLaren at the end of last year. I, personally, feel that this is a very exciting line-up, and I'm interested to see how 'Checo' performs alongside the highly rated Hulkenberg.
"It will be really interesting to work with Checo," he said. "We both have four years’ worth of experience in Formula One, so you can say we are at a similar stage in our careers.
"Of course, we will both try to be in front of each other, but that’s normal when you are in these circumstances. We thrive in a competitive environment and this is what we will have here."
Pre-season testing for the 2014 season kicks off on the 28th of January at the Jerez circuit.
