Friday practice changes given green light by teams

The shape of the Friday practice schedule at a Formula 1 race weekend could be set to change for next season, in order to give young drivers more time out on track.

The sport looks set to give the green light to an extended first practice session, enabling test and reserve drivers from F1 teams the chance to drive during a race weekend.

AUTOSPORT reports that teams have approved a change in the sporting regulations that will allow the first session to be extended from 90 to 120 minutes.

The two hour session will allow teams to swap their race and young drivers during the first session, further encouraging teams to get involved and allow their young-guns a chance to test F1 machinery.

Teams are currently allowed to field rookie drivers in the FP1 but with no mid-session changes. The rule change will help teams find a healthy balance, giving both drivers time to test the car during the first session.

The matter was discussed during a meeting of the Sporting Working Committee ahead of the Singapore Grand Prix weekend.

It is also expected that teams will be handed one extra set of tyres which can only be used during the first 30 minutes of the session.

With the teams approving to the rule change, it now needs to be sent to the FIA World Motor Sport Council for approval. Their next meeting is in Croatia next week.
