The German, who took two titles for Benetton in the 1990's before dominating the early 2000's on route to five more titles with Ferrari, believes that it is possible for his countryman to reach his record.

Speaking to Belgian television Vier, Schumacher said: "He has the best package, and championships are usually won by the best. Records are there to be beaten."

"They motivated me when I was racing, and in the end I achieved it. Believe me, if Sebastian was able to surpass what I did, I would be happy for him. In a short time he has won three titles, so why couldn’t he win seven?"

The 44-year-old, who retired from the sport at the end of last year for the second time, was 32 years old when he clinched his fourth title.

Meanwhile Vettel, who is just 26, is currently on route to clinching his fourth consecutive championship victory with a commanding 46 point lead in the 2013 standings.

However Spanish sports daily Marca quoted Vettel disagreeing with Schumacher's view: "I have three titles, which is nothing compared to seven."

He added: "Beating his record is not something that can happen in the next couple of years, so I don’t even think about it. I have had some very good years but it could change suddenly."
