Thailand's Formula 1 future hits stumbling block

Thailand's hope to host a Formula 1 race around the streets of Bangkok in 2015 have hit trouble.

The original track plan would have seen racing cars pass famous monuments in the cities historic quarter such as the Grand Palace, the Temple of Dawn and Victory Monument.

The 5.995km circuit was originally proposed and would be built around the Royal Thai Navy Dockyard in Bangkok, making it the third street race on the calendar alongside Monaco and Singapore.

However plans and preparations have hit a key stumbling block after officials banned racing in the city's historic district.

The Bangkok Metropolitan Authority passed a low that bans car racing in the area due to it being a conservation zone.

Kriangphon Pattanarat, director general of city planning department, told AFP "The law came into effect on May 16th prohibiting car racing in inner Bangkok because that area is a conservation for culture and arts,"

It is still unknown whether a differing location will be considered to host the grand prix but if Thailand want to join the likes of Russia on the F1 calendar, a new plan is needed.
