In-season testing was trialled last year but was binned shortly after for this season. However 2014 could see a total of four in-season tests take place after teams voted in favour of the move.
A meeting on Saturday evening of the Canadian Grand Prix by the Sporting Working Group (SWG) saw eight of the 11 teams currently on the grid vote in favour of the additional tests. It is thought that Caterham and Marussia were two teams to appose the decision due to costs.
The 2014 season looks to be the longest in the sports history. Alongside the in-season test plans was the possibility of an extra pre-season test which could see the on track action kick off as early as late January. There also looks to be 21 races on the calendar due to Russia and New Jersey joining the fray although Korea looks to be in trouble financially which could see its race being dropped.
The decision to stage the four in-season tests will now go to the FIA's World Motorsport Council on June 28th where it could be written into the 2014 regulations.
The tests are thought to take place immediately after four of the European races. This will help to save costs with both Barcelona and Silverstone being the only two venues that have been confirmed to stage the tests so far.
Costs will also be decreased by the scrapping of the Young Driver Test that usually takes place at the end of the season alongside cutting straight line testing allocations from eight to two with filming days also being restricted to just two days.
The cancellation of the young driver test, which many feel is vital for helping to prepare for future stardom, could see restrictions put in place mandating that a rookie driver must be run at some point during testing.
With the proposed changes, F1 in 2014 could be the longest season in history.
