I was deeply saddened to hear the news yesterday that Murray Walker - former Formula One commentator - has been diagnosed with cancer.
The 89-year-old found out the news when results of a blood test taken after he broke his pelvis earlier in the year discovered he has a form of lymphatic system cancer. He will undergo chemotherapy over the next few months but the good news is that it was found early and is treatable.
Speaking about his condition, he said: "They've caught it incredibly early. It's treatable, the doctors say my condition is mild and I'm very hopeful."
Murray is an inspiration of mine. Whilst I sadly did not watch the sport in an era that he commentated on, I have watched hundreds of videos with his commentary and know his style very well. I always loved his enthusiastic and informative commentary and his true passion and commitment to the sport.
He has commentated on numerous forms of motorsport, first starting off at hillclimb events before taking to the mic for Formula One alongside the likes of James Hunt and Martin Brundle.
Fellow journalist Maurice Hamilton tweeted the news - the first time that I heard what had happened. He followed it up with this tweet which typically describes Murray - a true legend and fan: "Despite having to face chemo, Murray is more concerned about having to miss Silverstone and Goodwood. Typical!"
Social media has been a buzz of activity and it's great to see so many messages being shared about Murray and wishing him well. It just proves how popular he is, a true legend and one of my inspirations and idols.
I would like to wish Murray a speedy recovering and all the best to him, my thoughts are with him as he goes through this difficult time but it is great to see that he is in high spirits, hopeful and always thinking of motorsport - typical.
Get well soon Murray!
