Pirelli delay tweaked tyre debut

Pirelli have revealed that their tweaked 2013 compound tyres will make their track debut at the next round of the season in Canada, but they will not be raced on.

Instead, the re-structured rubber will make its race debut at the British Grand Prix which takes place at the end of July.

A spokesperson told AUTOSPORT: "We'll be bringing two sets per team for Friday practice with a view to implementing the new rear tyres in Silverstone,"

"As the regulations allow for this and for reasons of sporting equity, we think that this is the best way forward."

With the 2014 contract deadline closing in, Pirelli have been the talk of the paddock - and not in a good way. Their 2013 compound tyres produced over 80 pit stops at the fifth round of the season in Barcelona. Mercedes and Red Bull Racing were the most vocal in expressing the need for change.

Pirelli decided to make the changes but the FIA restricted them. The Italian firm can not create tyres that produce a performance advantage, they have to be tweaked for safety reasons only.

Post-Spain, Mercedes took part in a private test for Pirelli using a 2013 car. This news broke prior to the start of the Monaco Grand Prix and has been picked up by the FIA. Pirelli are adamant that they let all teams know about the tests and "some responded, some didn't" as Motorsport Director Paul Hembery said.

However that doesn't seem to be the case and what has the paddock in uproar is the use of their 2013 car. Rules state that no in-season testing must take place and any other testing should be done with a car that is at least two years old.

Below all this drama, the firm also announced changes to the GP3 series tyre in a bid to create more "combative" racing. The current tyre is not durable enough and a new, harder compound will be introduced for the next round of the season in Valencia (not the street track, the other one) which is the series only stand-alone race.
