Vettel Flies to Russia for Grand Prix Venue Visit

2014 will welcome the Russian Grand Prix to the calendar and triple world champion Sebastian Vettel visited the Sochi circuit to see how preparations were going ahead of next July's race.

The Bahrain Grand Prix race winner jetted straight to Russia to check out the 3.649 mile street track that is currently being constructed. The race has a seven year contract and marks the end of a 30 year campaign to bring Formula 1 to Russia.

Sebastian Vettel, alongside former Red Bull Racing driver David Coulthard, visited the circuit. Last years world champion too to some of the existing corners on the track in one of Infiniti's road cars (of course, what else?) despite terrible conditions.

Discussing his first impressions and his visit to the country he said "It's my first time in Russia and I'm already looking forward to coming back next year, the facilities here look incredible.

"I didn't see much of the circuit but the drawing looks interesting. Some corners look very quick, especially the 180-degree one. It could be quite challenging for the drivers."

He added "Now you need some imagination to see how the circuit will look after construction work will be finished. But this place is incredible - with the city, the sea and mountains around it."

David Coulthard accompanied Vettel on his trip and gave his first impressions of the circuit on Twitter, saying "Most apexes expected to be around 120kmh so not as slow as it looks and one super long corner which has entry speed of 130, exit of 300kph!"

The track still has plenty of construction work to complete ahead of next years inaugural race but organisers insist that it will be ready for the race.

They are expecting visit counts in the region of 100,000 for its debut race. The track weaves its way around the Olympic Park and will weave around the stadium, ice hockey and speed skating facilities.
