It all looked so good for him 12 months ago. Lining up sixth on the grid for his first Bahrain Grand Prix. But that ended in disappointment, as did his second attempt at finding success in the Bahrain desert.
Daniel Ricciardo was one of the stars of the show in Shanghai one week earlier, but after lining up 13th on the grid he eventually slipped to 16th by the chequered flag.
It was another poor and inconsistent showing by Toro Rosso and the Aussie was far from happy when writing in his own blog for the Italian teams website.
Discussing the difficulties of the weekend, he started with a rather blunt summary. "(It was) just awful." was how started, before adding "it's something we need to go away and understand, even taking into account this is a different circuit with different demands and different tyres, it's just not normal for the car to change that much from one week to the next - particularly when we haven't done anything to it"
He continued "I had the slowest lap of the race, eight-tenths slower than one of the Marussia's and I finished the race only 9s clear of one of the Caterham's."
Ricciardo was far from happy, and backed up his poor race pace by saying "As I haven't forgotten how to drive in the last seven days, there's something wrong with the car that we need to understand. That performance has gone somewhere.
"It has to be something big - but not necessarily something easy to find. There's a variable in there that we have to dig out."
He starred in qualifying for the 2012 race but slipped back similarly in the race after a positively dire first lap. Now, after shining so brightly in China the Toro Rosso has seemingly dropped off the pace once again.
After finishing ninth in the 2012 constructors standings the team had high hopes of elevating themselves from the back of the mid-field pack, however despite Williams not scoring any points this season they are seemingly just as fast (if not faster) in comparison to the Red Bull junior squad.
