Thailand next to join the Formula 1 calendar?

Formula 1 has continued to move away from its true heart, Europe, and travel to the East. Now officials in Thailand have confirmed the proposed route for their 2015 Grand Prix.

The 3.375 mile street track has been approved by the government and looks set to take place at night, much like the Singapore Grand Prix. Races in New Jersey and Russia are entering the 2014 calendar, which begs the question of what races will be dropped?
The deal between Bernie Ecclestone and Thailand officials was agreed last year. The layout features a long straights and tight corners weaving around Bangkok, with the start finish straight overlooking the Royal Thai Naval Dockyard.

Other tourist spots will also be passed on the track route including the Grand Palace, Victory Monument and Temple of Dawn.

Govenor of the Sports Authority of Thailand, Kanokphand Chulakasem, told the Bangkok Post about the future Grand Prix venue, saying "As the starting and finishing point would be on the bank of the Chao Phraya River, we may be able to build the main stands in the river"

"It would also be convenient for transportation of equipment"

He also added "Only a small group of residents would be affected by the proposed route."

The country had been in talks about hosting a race since 2011 but after hosting the Race of Champions last year, it seems that momentum has spurred them on to get one under their belt and confirmed.

The sound of Formula 1 engines is something that has been heard in Thailand, Mark Webber performed a demo run with Red Bull in 2010. His route took him along Ratchadamnoen Avenue which looks set to feature in the proposed track.

Chulakasem also revealed that the circuit could host a capacity of up to 150,000 spectators.
