Powell Post - Volume 2

Welcome to the second instalment of Alice Powell's JLF1 Blog series, check it out and lots more to come from Alice as the year progresses.

Hi everyone! Thanks for coming back to read the second instalment of my JLF1 Blog, Powell Post!

It has been a very busy month for me! I was lucky enough to be interviewed by Sky Sports News at the start of the month, promoting International Women’s Day. If you missed the interview, check it out below.

I have been continuing to look for funding to race this season and you have probably seen on my social networks that I will be racing in the F3 Cup for 2013 with Mark Bailey Racing. Some people have commented saying it is a step backwards for me and questioned why I’m not doing GP3. I would have loved to have raced in GP3 for the 2013 season, but the only thing that has stopped me is funding! However, F3 Cup is still a great championship even though the cars are slower and you don’t have LIVE TV and follow the Formula 1 field. I don’t think it is a step backwards, it is the only step that was possible for me to get my bum in a seat and keep racing. I am really looking forward to get the season under way and get out racing!!

So what are my hopes for the season? Well, to finish in the top 3 would be fantastic. I haven’t had much experience with F3 machinery so I will need to get used to the car, the engine and the Avon tyres as soon as possible! I tested the car on Friday and wow, it was cold weather, but the test went really well! I had to put on extra pairs of socks and a t-shirt under my fire proof top as I was so cold! That is something I haven’t had to do whilst racing in Europe! However, it was great to get back on track at Oulton Park. I had forgotten how great that circuit was.

Away from the driving I have had several sponsorship meetings this month, some successful others not so. I have also been busy doing some PR, which included Sky Sports and interviews with several newspapers (including the Daily Telegraph). I really enjoy the PR, I think it’s great!

I have also been doing some driver coaching for Sean Walkinshaw Racing. This is a new team racing in the new BRDC Formula 4 Championship. I really enjoy the coaching and believe it or not, it helps me with my racing as you see things from different perspectives.

I am glad the F1 season is up and running again! What a race we had in Malaysia hey? I have been asked by several on what my thoughts are on the Vettel/ Webber situation…Well, I personally feel that it was naughty by Vettel not to listen to team orders. I have never been in a position where I have had team orders. It all depends what is in your contract with the race team, but I am sure team orders are in his! In the lower formula's team orders are rare. Vettel is a great driver, and it is a shame such thing has happened as he has lost fans because of this. However, you cannot take away Vettel’s speed and talent in a race car!

Another story that emerged from world of F1 is the announcement of Claire Williams being appointed as Deputy Team Principal at the Williams F1 Team. This is another great step forward for females in the world of Motorsport and something that I am pleased to see happen. Some say that she has only been appointed because she is Frank’s daughter, but I am 100% sure this is not the case as he would want the right person to be in charge of the team and obviously saw Claire as the right choice.

I shall have much more to say in my next blog as the race season will be under way and I hope to have some more exciting stories to tell.

All the best,

Alice xxx
