Hamilton Aiming to Beat Alonso

They may not have got on particularly well when they were team-mates at McLaren in 2007, but Lewis Hamilton has said the main man he wants to beat this year is Fernando Alonso.

Hamilton said the excitement level of trying to beat Alonso is higher than that of former team-mate Button. Many think if he can beat the fellow Brit in 2013 it will show he has made the right move.

The decision to race for Mercedes in 2013 was one that was heavily criticised, but with Mercedes topping the time sheets in testing Hamilton looks to be in a stronger position than first thought.

Talking to The Mail on Sunday he said "Talking about a rivalry with Jenson doesn't really excite me, the rivalry with Fernando excites me more."

He continued "He's the guy I want to beat. You also want to beat Seb (Vettel) as they are the ones with the most titles. But Alonso's the fastest driver I can see. He's also one of the most experienced.

"Anyone would struggle to beat him. You've got to try and stay ahead of him in a Ferrari that's competitive. That's going to be the real challenge."

Alonso debuted in Formula One 13 seasons ago now, racing in 12 of them. Alongside Button and Webber, he is one of the most experienced drivers in the field after racing for the likes of Renault, McLaren and now Ferrari.

Hamilton in contrast debuted seven seasons ago and has been at McLaren for six of them, 2013 will be his first away from the Woking based squad. The Brit says the more he gets to know the Mercedes team the more he knows it was the right choice.

"The more people I meet here, the more excited I get. It's just a beautiful place to be. I have just been on a good curve lately, going from strength to strength and making the right decisions.

"I'm absolutely 100 percent happy and confident in the decision I made."

Hamilton lines up at Mercedes alongside former karting team mate Nico Rosberg.
